The number of native speakers is estimated to be between 13 and 15 million worldwide.
The modern form of Hungarian has eight recognized dialects, but there is a huge amount of mutual intelligibility. The dialects are usually based on geographical location with Szekely and Central Transylvanian almost exclusive to Romania and the other six can be seen to radiate outwards over the borders into neighboring countries. Three dialect regions join at the nation’s capital Budapest.
The majority of native speakers live in Hungary; however there are areas of native speakers in Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Romania and Ukraine.
Some Fun Facts about Hungarian:
The modern form of Hungarian is written with an expanded form of Latin alphabet. It uses phonemic orthography which means that pronunciation of words can usually be predicted from the way the word is written. In addition to the standard Latin alphabet, the Hungarian language represents additional vowel sounds with Latin characters which have been modified.
Hungarian speakers are responsible for some of the world’s greatest inventions such as the ballpoint pen, holographs and the Rubik’s cube.
